Pack Basket Workshop with Jeff Gottlieb

Join us for a unique opportunity to make a large pack basket with basket-maker Jeff Gottlieb. This sturdy, functional basket is strong enough for foraging, a trip to the farmers’ market, or just to haul all your gear along. First time weavers, don’t be daunted by this project! This 2-day class is open to all levels and offers beginners an introduction to basketry.

Saturday, students will form the shape of their pack and begin weaving the basket. Sunday will focus on finishing the rim of the pack and attaching the straps (including learning to rivet). Each student will leave with a finished pack basket, ready for seasonal adventures! 

Participants should bring a sharp non-serrated knife and strong, sharp shears (we will have a few to borrow).

Irvine is honored to host Jeff Gottlieb for this workshop: a naturalist, craftsman and homesteader from the hills of North Carolina.  As a Craftsman, Jeff is drawn to the fascinating and satisfying pastime of making useful and beautiful objects from natural materials, including daily implements, natural buildings (he has built more than 60 including those at Irvine), art projects and artifact replicas. Jeff loves wood carving, drawing, sculpture, knots, rope making and leather work. It is important to Jeff to connect these to any cultural, practical, historical and ceremonial uses of these items by Indigenous peoples. Not only will this workshop allow you to learn the process of pack making, you also get to spend time listening to his stories and soaking in his deep knowledge of the natural world.

Dates: Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4 (Two-day class)

Time: 9:00 AM-5:00 PM both days. May finish early on Sunday, depending on the size of individual projects.

Location: Under the Deck or Picnic Grove

Cost: $175 ($115 for class + $60 for materials)

Please note: Members (Pacesetter level and above) will receive their usual discount on the class portion of the fee but not the materials portion.

​Cancellation policy for this workshop: 

• Workshop will be canceled if minimum registration is not met. In the event we have to cancel, all registrants will be notified via the email they registered with, and all registration fees will be fully refunded.
• If you need to withdraw for personal reasons and notify us more than 1 week before the workshop, we will refund the class cost of $115 minus a 10% processing fee. You will still be responsible for the $60 materials fee unless we fill your spot. If/when we fill your spot, we will refund your $60 materials fee.
• If you need to withdraw for personal reasons and notify us less than 1 week before the workshop, no refund will be issued unless we fill your spot. If we fill your spot, we will refund the entire $175 minus a processing fee of 10% of the class portion. 
• We will not issue any refunds to last-minute withdrawals that we cannot fill. This includes illness.
