Nature Under Your Nose: My Journey to Increasing Representation in Outdoor Spaces

Growing up in the Washington DC area, I never would have imagined that my love of playing outside, my love of animals, and the environment would be the tools I use to become a force of change in a time where participation and representation of people of color is lacking in outdoor spaces.

David Greaves is a wildlife photographer from Clinton, Maryland who serves as a biologist and Remedial Project Manager at The Environmental Protection Agency in Philadelphia. David’s love for the environment and wildlife was fostered during his childhood, where he found inspiration through PBS nature, Wild America, and Nova and reading animal encyclopedias. 

As founder of Nature Under Your Nose, David believes that nature can be experienced at any time and in any place.  Through the power of photography, he encourages people of all ages in communities of color to explore the natural world around them. His work encourages the viewer to look around and explore the diversity of nature that can be found in their backyards or discovering nature while traveling abroad.  There is a story behind each of his images and each of his images evokes a sense of emotion in the viewer.
