Maryland's Amphibians: Meet Your Neighbors!

Come meet your neighbors! Maryland is home to a diverse group of amphibian species ranging from the mighty American Bullfrog to the diminutive Eastern Red-backed Salamander. Allow me to introduce you to Maryland’s amphibian species. We will chat about where you can find these animals in Maryland and how you can identify them. We will also discuss what makes these critters special, why they are important, and current threats they are facing. We are fortunate to have a rich diversity of amphibians in Maryland—let’s learn about them!

Dr. Heather Cunningham is a Professor of Biology and coordinator of the Biological Sciences Program at Chesapeake College. She was the project coordinator of the Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas (2010-2014) and co-editor of the Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas. Heather has published research in Ecography, Journal of Animal Ecology, International Journal of Zoology, Herpetological Conservation and Biology, and Herpetological Review. She received her PhD from the University of Alabama where her research focused on the distribution, ecology, and behavior of terrestrial salamanders.
