BARK BASKET WORKSHOP
Around the world, simple baskets have traditionally been fashioned from bark by many cultures, including the Eastern Woodland Indians. In Maryland, there is a short window during May and June when tulip poplar bark can easily be removed and shaped into a basket. In this workshop, after hiking to Irvine’s Native American site, we will learn this traditional skill - how to ‘slip’ bark from a precut log, score and bend it to transform into a basket of your own. Bring a small fixed-blade knife if you have one (there will be some available to borrow if needed).
