DESCRIPTION: \n \n \n \n \n \n Presentation Title: Mysterious Migrations & Luscious Libations \n \n \n Date & Time of Program: Thursday, February 18, 2027 - 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM \n \n \n Speakers: Rob Mardiney \n \n \n Description of Program: Migration, one of nature’s most extraordinary phenomena, has intrigued scientists for centuries. How can a butterfly, weighing less than a paperclip, travel more than 3,000 miles to its winter home in Mexico? How can a small shorebird fly nonstop for eight days across the ocean to South America? \n \n \n Many of migration’s secrets remain unsolved yet advances in modern technology now allow researchers to track individual animals in real time, revealing new insights into their epic journeys. Join us as we explore the incredible migrations of birds and butterflies, discover the science behind their astonishing endurance and navigation, and learn about the challenges they face in a changing world. \n \n \n \n \n \n Speaker Bio: For 35 years, until his retirement in 2020, Robert Mardiney was the Director of Education at Irvine Nature Center. In addition to over-seeing the education department, he helped transition Irvine from a tiny nature center in Stevenson to the much larger organization it is today. With degrees in both Biology and Environmental Education, Rob was a Past-president of the Maryland Environmental Education Association, and he served on the Board of the Maryland Native Plant Society. Rob has taught adult Continuing Ed Courses at Hopkins and Towson Universities, and he was also the 2012 recipient of the Garden Club of America’s Award for excellence in Environmental Education. \n \n \n \n \n \n Member Cost: $58.00 per registrant \n \n \n Non-Member Cost: $68.00 per registrant \n \n \n This event will include a buffet style dinner by Ace Catering and signature alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails by the French Paradox. Adults only please. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
