Earth Friends The Art and Science of the Land Fall 2018

(Ages 9-14 years)

We will discover the fascinating secrets of Irvine's 210 acres of land by exploring and replicating eco artists like Holt, Smithson, Godsworthy, Christo, Shilling, Long, Kidner and more. The students will blend ephemeral (non-permanent) art, STEM, and natural materials with environmental forces such as wind, water, and sunlight. Throughout the 13 weeks we will generally make use of environmental science, integrating information from biology, physics, plant science, soil science, and physical geography. When we investigate and create sculptures or installments, we will make use of human geography by studying topography maps and thus, enhancing our own mapping and math skills. We will document our work with photographs and sketches which we will add to our journals. In this unique study of environmental arts, we will decipher the possible damage that could be inflicted on the land vs the "cause no harm" approach of sustainable arts. An optional field trip to the Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore will be offered.

Cancellation & Refund Policy: Irvine reserves the right to cancel an education session due to insufficient enrollment. If Irvine cancels a session, all fees will be fully refunded. If you remove your child from a session before it begins, membership fees are non-refundable, and the refunds are as follows: 21 or more days prior to the start of the session 50% of the session fee will be refunded; 20-14 days prior to the start of the session 25% of the session fee will be refunded; 13 or less days prior to the start of the session 0% of the session fee will be refunded.
